A check presented to Christ's Table will provide more than 5,000 meals.
The donation of just under $1,500 came from Sunday's performance of Handel's Messiah in Zanesville. Music Director of the Zanesville Civic Chorus Jim McLaughlin presented the check Thursday afternoon. He said since the concert has been completely funded by private, and benefactor donations, for the last ten years collections taken from the performance now benefit local charities.
"It's paying it forward," expressed McLaughlin. "It's exciting to do the concert but it's even more exciting to see what we can do beyond the concert."
Executive Director of Christ's Table Keeley Warden said the donation will provide about a months worth of meals. She plans to use the donation to purchase additional hams needed for their Christmas dinner.
"This time of year 5,000 meals is a lot because our numbers are up with Christmas time being at the end of the month," explained warden. "We can really use this donation to help thousands of people."
McLaughlin said Sunday's concert was the largest turn out he has seen in several years. The performance has been a tradition in the community for more than 80 years.
