As temperatures continue to drop during the winter months, it's important to remember those four-legged friends who have to be outside.
Executive Director of the Muskingum County Animal Shelter Society, Larry Hostetler said it's important to make sure that pets have a warm place to stay, especially those who have to be outside for long periods of time.
Hostetler recommends shelters from pet stores that have been rated for cold weather.
" There's a lot of pet stores and supply companies sell pre-made dog houses or igloos and those are specifically tested to protect them against the elements, so we suggest something of that." said, Hostetler
Animals who are outside for long periods of time, like people, are at risk of frostbite, hypothermia and pneumonia.
When setting up a shelter for your animal, Hostetler said, it's all in the material.
" Avoid using, you'll see a lot of areas where they'll have 55 gallon drums, they don't protect them, they don't keep the cold out. so you're better off purchasing something that's specifically made for an animal that's outdoors. " added Hostetler.
It's important to remember that water will freeze, so changing water frequently is important during the winter.
