Fewer trauma patients will need to be transported from Genesis Hospital to Columbus.
The Healthcare System has been verified as a Level Three Trauma Center, meaning they're now able to care for the majority of injured patients.
"For example if someone comes in that has a life threatening injury we can care for them no matter how life threatening the injury is," said Trauma Services Medical Director Stuart Chow. "Some injuries require Level One Trauma Care in Columbus and those patients are stabilized and transferred to Columbus, but the majority of the patients can be kept here and taken care of here in Zanesville."
Genesis is the only Level Three Trauma Center in our region.
In order to be recognized as a Trauma Center the hospital must meet certain criteria, proving they have both the resources and staff needed for proper care.
"We had to submit to American College Surgeons a questionnaire," said Chow. "After the questionnaire was reviewed by the ACS they would visit us, meet with the individuals involved in the program, visit the facilities, visit the staff, ask questions and determine if we meet criteria to safely care of a Trauma patients."
Trauma Centers vary from Level One to Level Four, with Level One caring for the most severely injured.
