Area schools are showing their appreciation for our troops overseas.
On Friday volunteers assembled about 50 care packages at the Muskingum County Community Foundation. Organizer Colby Childs said students collected donations for members of the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team that recently deployed to Afghanistan from Ohio.
"This project specifically was born out of a personal connection," said Childs. "Our supervisor's husband is currently serving in Afghanistan for eleven months. We've been watching her go through that sacrifice of her husband being away."
This is the first time the AmeriCorps Ohio College Guides have organized the project. Childs said the support from the community has been overwhelming.
"The end of a project is always the most rewarding part after all the weeks of wondering if we were going to get the donations in and the money to send these things, so to be here today and to know that so many people have been a part of making this happen, it really just exceeded any expectation that I had," said Childs.
Even though it's too late to contribute to these boxes, Childs said she encourages everyone to organize their own care packages for the troops.
