Muskingum County has its first shale drilling rig in place after years of exploration.
The drill is located in southeastern Muskingum County, in Meigs Township near The Wilds animal preserve.
Other shale updates were presented today at the Shale Task Force meeting.
Task force facilitator and County Commissioner Steve Strauss said two shale rigs in Guernsey county are now producing and providing data.
One well is actually stated as being, "above expectation" and the other one is, "very good" and that's kind of interesting stuff, the information available from the ODNR website, so kind of exciting there that it's actually starting to happen, and we know what it is," said Strauss.
State Senator Troy Balderson and U.S. Representative Bill Johnson were in attendance at Friday's meeting.
Johnson hopes the Marcellus and Utica shale projects will inspire the next generation of Americans to take risks.
"This is going to have such a great opportunity to put America back on the path of American exceptionalism, to give our young people something to hope and dream about in the future," said Johnson.
The meeting was held at the Zanesville-Muskingum County Welcome Center.
