A Dresden family is learning to cope after a fire destroyed their home Friday evening...
Chris and Anne House, along with their two children, were renting the home at 21 East 6th Street in Dresden. Crews were called to the scene after Chris detected fire coming from the basement.
"As a family, we've trained for disaster. We had bags by the door, that are supposed to have food, water, in case of natural disasters, tornadoes, you know, that kind of stuff they tell you to prepare for and we practice fire drills. And I want to say, I don't think we practiced enough," said Chris.
The home is considered a total loss. The family is receiving assistance from We The People Family Preservation, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides assistance to disaster victims.
"The main necessities that we all enjoy in life, they now need. And tomorrow is their "up" date for leaving this hotel, because they were put up until Monday. And so, we're hoping someone will hear us and help us," said L. Wilson, Founder of We The People.
"To get clothes that we needed, because we were still wearing the same smokey clothes that we had from that night," said Anne.
The organization is accepting donations to help the family. If you would like to donate you can by calling 740 610-1643 or 740 622-0168. The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire. The Muskingum Valley Red Cross has already helped the family with funds for food, clothing and a hotel stay.
