Students Devour A Lesson In Energy

Some Zane Grey Elementary students got a delicious lesson in energy Thursday.

3rd grade students in Nancy Lasure's class spent the morning learning about solar energy first-hand from students at the Mid-East Adult Center.

The Mid-East students helped the 3rd graders in constructing solar ovens using a cardboard box, poster board, a metal coat-hanger and aluminum foil.

The oven uses the sun's rays to reflect sunlight into the oven in order to cook the food, and in honor of the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, hot dogs were the food of choice.

Nancy Lasure's husband, Tim serves as the lead Commercial and Residential Electrical Instructor at the Mid-East Adult Center, and said teaching solar energy to children at a young age will benefit them when they become adults.

"Solar is growing in popularity and in usage, by many many parts of our day-to-day life," said Lasure. "And that's the kind of things that we need to start with our younger groups, And then work up into the high school level, and then of course we have those programs available at Mid-East Adult Center."

Lasure said there are several local places that utilize solar energy including O.D.O.T. and the Muskingum County E.M.A., but added that there are many misconceptions when it comes to how people can use solar energy for their own personal use.

"I think when people think of solar energy, they think of hundreds of panels for 40 or 50 panels on the top of their roof, and those kind of things, and it doesn't really have to be. You can use very few panels, and get a lot of energy out of them," added Lasure.

Lasure said that also it can be harder to utilize solar energy during the winter months in Ohio, many people are enticed when they hear they can save roughly 50 percent on their electrical cost per year.
