Zane State College Honors Its Veterans

Zane State College honored Muskingum County veterans with a flag raising ceremony May 24th.

Zane State College's Veteran and Service Members Council invited veterans in observance of Memorial Day.

Mike Ross served as an airborne infantryman for the United States Army in Iraq and is president of the Veteran's club.

Zane State College has earned the ranking of "Military Friendly College" from G.I. Jobs magazine for the past three years by doing the most to embrace America's veterans as students.

"We have a high number of veterans here over 100 attending veterans and we wanted to be able to create a resource center facility for the veterans to get access to information regarding their benefits in healthcare and they've also provided an office for veterans to come and use computers and have some privacy and we perform events and fundraisers in support of that."

Council members also have a hand in "Operation Overwatch" a non-profit organization formed by local veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The goal is to create an inviting environment for veterans transitioning from military service to life as a civilian.

"We're very proactive in trying to support our veterans in any way that we can and that's how we've been awarded that," said Director of Veteran's Affairs Cindi Swope.

She expresses her gratitude for Mike Ross.

"He is just an awesome guy, he has really taken charge of our veteran's club this is their second year for it, it's really starting to get off the ground. He's always out there pushing for the veterans to come together and support their initiatives here at the college as well as out in the community," commented Swope.

Swope welcomes all veterans to come to the Veteran's Affairs office to get help with educational benefits whether they plan to attend Zane State College or somewhere else.
