Campaign for Medical Center Hits $5 Million

The Genesis HealthCare Foundation is well on its way to reaching a fundraising goal for a new medical center.

So far the organization has raised $5 million toward a $15 million campaign initiative.  Executive Director of the Genesis HealthCare Foundation Paul McClelland said the plan to build a medical center on the existing Bethesda Hospital site has been well received.

"We started with our board members, and they're local folks who really understand the importance of our mission to this community in providing quality health care," said McClelland.

The project will be financed through a combination of bonds and the $15 million campaign.  CEO Genesis HealthCare System Matthew Perry said the facility will consist of a new five-story patient tower attached to a renovated Bethesda Hospital.

"The cancer center is going to be a very integrated cancer center, so all of the services surrounding cancer care are going to be in one location," said Perry.  "It will be multidisciplinary from a physician's standpoint, so all different types of physicians who care for cancer patients will operate out of it."

The campaign is scheduled to run through late 2013.  The new medical center is expected to open in 2015.
