2-1-1 Helping The Community

The 211 Call Center of the United Way wants to inform the community of helpful events taking place this summer.

Manager Audrey Foster said the center received more than 900 calls in June for food and clothing referrals, but now is the perfect time for parents to start on back-to-school plans.

"If you've got a child starting kindergarten there is a kindergarten backpack and school supply giveaway that would be really important to maybe some families getting their children," said Foster.

Foster said Thursday is the last day to sign up for the "Lace Up for Kids" giveaway. She said the center also gathers donations for pantries, but they have a special request in the midst of the heat wave.

"If folks want to donate a fan or an air conditioner, that would be greatly appreciated," explained Foster.

Those donations will be for the elderly and disabled only. Anyone who has received one previously will not be eligible again.
