Port Authority Hopeful for Oil & Gas Development

The Zanesville-Muskingum County Port Authority is talking about the oil and gas industry and future economic development.

At Monday's meeting, board members discussed continuing efforts to reach out to the oil and gas industry to provide services that will benefit our area.

Right now, a majority of the drilling is taking place northeast of Muskingum County.

Executive Director Mike Jacoby said while this may not have been what many expected, he believes efforts to reach out to oil and gas companies at their annual meeting at the Zanesville Country Club were successful and could result in future partnerships and jobs for the county.

"We can point to several companies that have come here to serve the Utica shale play and we're very accessible we've got a lot of assets and amenities here and we would be welcoming of those companies to come to our area and we think we got a good response," said Jacoby.

The Port Authority also heard a report from the county's Business Incubator about a possible partnership to help small businesses develop in the county.

Jacoby said the port authority wants to be able to help them achieve their goals.

"They're saying they've been a part of creating over 100 jobs and have plans to be a part of creating maybe 400 or so jobs over the next five years and they're doing good work, and we'd like to work closely with them because it takes a team effort," added Jacoby.

Financially, Jacoby said the port authority is doing well after the sale of land in the Eastpointe Business Park to Halliburton.

In executive session, Jacoby said discussions were held to determine whether to develop another large site in Muskingum County for economic growth.
