A group of Russian delegates is visiting the Muskingum County Business Incubator.
They are traveling with representatives from the Great Lakes Rural Community Assistance Program. Director Deb Martin said the purpose of the trip is to explore the similarities between rural American and rural Russian communities.
"We find that in rural areas, it's very difficult in terms of finding training for leaders and there's frequent turnover in the leadership, so I don't think that people are really equipped when they come into the job to understand what it takes to actually run a community," said Martin.
Martin said aging populations is another problem in rural areas. The seminars allow the two countries to share ideas on how to solve these issues. Marina Mikhailova is the director of the Arkhangelsk Regional Centre For Social Technologies in Russia.
"It was very interesting to hear about companies that think local and buy local, because I think it's one of the very necessary steps to do, especially in rural areas," said Mikhailova. "Money must stay in the places where they are instead of going out to the big cities."
The American delegates will visit Russia next spring.
