The Putnam Underground Railroad Education Center held its annual open house and membership drive Sunday.
The P.U.R.E. Center is focused on teaching the community about the role Zanesville played in the abolition movement.
"Our goal is to help promote knowledge and education and understanding of just what a really great part we played in the change of history," said Liesta Walker, President of P.U.R.E.
It's one of southeastern Ohio's newest land marks and tells the inspiring story of freedom across Ohio. This year the open house featured an artist whose work brings history alive through paint.
"The American Civil War and of course the Underground Railroad with this area in Ohio. Very fascinating to hear about the stories, and to add to that to help tell the story I produce paintings," said artist Adam Chandler.
The center can be found in the Historic Putnam District on Woodlawn Avenue. For more information, visit the organizations website at www.purecenter.org
