Zanesville City Schools are working with the community to help students read.
Project MORE stands for Mentoring in Ohio for Reading Excellence. The scientifically based program shows that students make reading level gains when they have a one-to-one mentor working with them in reading.
"It's been fantastic the kids absolutely love having people come in and work with them and it's become a thing where I think a lot of them really look toward their buddy readers, their mentors to come in and spend that time with them," said Steven Foreman, Director of Special Programs.
Foreman says the program works so well because students respond more to the volunteers because they want to please them and show what they know.
"It's not imperative that they be trained in reading in anyway it's just that students really just need someone that's going to take some time to read with them and to help them and to listen to them and work on some of the specific problems that they may be having through emergence and learning to read."
