While libraries around the state explore the new e-readers the John McIntire Library is one of the first to loan out the devices.
Starting Monday, customers can checkout the Kindle Touch. The five devices are preloaded with five titles. Each Kindle is a different genre including romance, sizzling romance, inspirational fiction, mystery and science fiction. Right now the Kindles are only available at the John McIntire Library.
"You cannot place holds on them and they are checked out at our reference desk," said Associate Director Blair Tom. "It's so our reference associate can help customers with the device if they've never used one before. We want them to have the time and attention to feel comfortable with it before they leave the building."
While some libraries provide e-readers within the confines of the library, Tom said John McIntire is one of the first if not the first to send them home with customers. He said this will make it more convenient.
"It breaks down that wall between the people that can have access to those and those that may not be able to, so it really is that exceptional library experience we work on everyday at our library," said Tom.
Tom said the library will monitor customer interest and make sure the process works for customers and then it will be expanded to the other library branches.
