Everyone has had the moments where sleep is hard to come by.
Dr. Michael Breus a well-known clinical psychologist and board certified sleep expert has appeared on shows like "Katie" and "Dr. Oz" sharing his message. He said the number one problem his patients face is not being able to turn off their brains. If people have that problem he suggests counting backward from 300 by three's.
"It's a lot of thinking but it prevents you from thinking about anything else," explained Dr. Breus. "It's so doggone boring that you're out like a light."
Breus said watching television before bed can also help as long as there's a timer set, but avoid using that computer.
"The computer is much more interactive and so I tell people let's try for an electronic curfew, meaning let's stop making e-mails, texts, using the phone about an hour before bed."
Other tips from Breus include doing your night hygiene routine in dim light to signal to your brain it's time for bed, buy a mattress that fits your sleep needs and wake up at the same time and go to bed at the same time, even on weekends. Dr. Breus made an appearance Thursday morning a Coconis Furniture in South Zanesville.
