Debris Removal

Muskingum County will finally get the storm clean up they need and provide jobs for those needing work.

The county received $900,000 as part of a National Emergency Grant. A portion of the money will be used to hire around 23 people to clean up areas around the county still needing debris removal from the June storm.

"This grant is a Department of Labor grant and so about 2/3 of the money will be for salaries and the other third will be equipment," said Bob Mercer of the Muskingum County Opportunity Center.

The Appalachian Center for Collaborative and Engaged Learning will be managing the program and working along with the Muskingum County Opportunity Center to hire workers for the program. To be eligible, participants must be a long-term laid off worker.

"The workers will be in the program for six months, and at the end of that program, they'll be eligible to go out into the workforce and we will assist them in developing a resume and employability skills hopefully to get them back into the workforce," said Mercer.

Interested job seekers must apply in person at the Muskingum County Opportunity Center on the corner of Fifth and Main Street in downtown Zanesville.
