Taking Steps for Crohn's and Colitis

A fall festival walk at the OU-Z/Zane State campus raised money for Crohn's and Colitis research.

The is the second annual "Take Steps For Crohn's and Colitis" walk. Crohn's and Colitis are irritable bowel diseases that infect the intestine and cause pain and fatigue, along with other symptoms. Take Steps manager Brianne McFarland says the worst part about these diseases is not just the severity.

"There is no cure for either of these diseases." explained McFarland. "A lot of people end up having surgeries and losing a large portion of their intestine and getting very, very sick, so we need to find a cure. To do that we need to raise funds to do the research.

Along with the walk, the event featured live music, good, children's activities, and a costume contest for pets and their owners.

"This has been a great community to work in." said McFarland. "The businesses and people around here are so supportive, and that's been really refreshing and fun to work with. We've come a long way from last year. Last year we had a smaller group and made less money, so we're definitely headed in the right direction.

The group raised approximately $12,000 fom Saturday's event. McFarland says she looks forward to organizing this again next year.
