The West Muskingum School District has tried many times to pass an operation levy to help sustain the district and stabilize their financial situation, and again this year the levy has failed.
In 2006, 2007 and 2008 the district failed to pass an income tax levy. In 2008 and twice in 2009 property tax levies also failed to pass. Superintendent William Harbron says with the 2012 levy also failing, the district that already had to instate pay-to-play programs, will continue to struggle.
"If you look at the five year financial forecast, you're looking at a recurring deficit that's going to occur, and there is no grant source that is going to fill in that gap." said Harbron.
The five year 5.9 mill emergency levy failed by 720 votes. Harbron is asking those within the district to remain committed and positive.
"We will somehow find a way to make this district work to serve the students of this district effectively." said Harbron. "For anybody to consider moving on to another district, that will just will just do more harm to the West Muskingum School District."
There is no set plan to receive funding yet, but Harbron says the district will continue to look at alternative ways to sustain the schools.
