Give Your Child A Head Start

Pre-School is the first step into a child's education and Zanesville offers that chance for every child.

Muskingum County Head Start has been in Zanesville since 1979. The school is a federally funded program and serves children three -to-five years old that are below 100 percent of the poverty index guidelines. The school not only serves the educational aspect but also works to bring about a greater degree of social competence in children.

"We focus on educational outcomes for pre-schoolers and then we also focus on their health, nutrition. their mental health we look at their transition into our program we look at their transition out of the program we just try to make it as smooth as we can for the parents and the children so it's not quite as scary as it once was," said Head Start Assistant Director, Stephanie Mills.

Head start partners with Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center and they have multiple sites around Zanesville to serve the children. Once a child is done with Head Start, the program assists them with their next step.

"We do work with the schools to ease that transition from Head Start to kindergarten. We also try to transition the kids into the classroom that have never been in a pre-school or a setting like that before too," said Head Start Director, Jeri Johnson.

Head Start, which held its annual feast celebration Friday, is also looking to accept new children.
