2012 Crime Stats

The Muskingum County Sheriff releases its crime stats for the year of 2012.

This past year the office worked more than 700 cases and made more than 270 arrests. The sheriff said they also confiscated more than $650,000 in drugs. In 2012 they also had over 300 burglary related crimes with a clearance rate of 19 percent. The sheriff said those types of cases are some of the hardest to solve, due to lack of evidence and information.

"I think for the most part our office does a pretty good job of trying to figure out who's committing these crimes and tracking them down and getting confessions out of them," said Sheriff Matt Lutz.

The sheriff said this year they've seen an increase in workload with the same number of staff. It hasn't been a problem for them. He's also proud of the work they've been doing through a grant for high visibility enforcement.

"We help cut down on crashes when we're trying to keep people slowed down to close to the speed limit," said Lutz. "I think looking at these stats we were able to get out in our community and show our community that we're working and trying to keep safer streets."

This year the sheriff's office investigated three homicides. Only one of those remains unsolved.
