New Concord native and retired U.S. Senator John Glenn and Cincinnati Reds owner Bob Castellini will be among four people receiving honorary degrees at the University of Cincinnati's commencement ceremonies this month.

In a press release on the schools website they said Glenn will receive an honorary doctorate in engineering.

He became the first American to orbit the earth on February 20, 1962 and was viewed as a national hero for helping lead the United States into space. Glenn also served as a U.S. Marine Corps pilot in World War II and the Korean War and later represented Ohio in the U.S. Senate for 24 years.

In 1998, at age 77, he became the oldest person to fly in space as he studied the effects of space travel on seniors while aboard the space shuttle Discovery.

Others receiving the honorary doctorates include pianist and conductor Leon Fleisher and Cincinnati business leader Sandra Heimann.

The commencement ceremony takes place on April 27.
