The Lorena

Every five years, The Lorena Sternwheeler is required to be inspected by the Coast Guard  which alone costs 47-thousand dollars and at  last weeks inspection they found several areas of concern.

"We did receive a call this morning from the Chamber of Commerce. Kelly Ashby agreed to partner up with us in any way that they could as far as financial help, that was good news, and the City has committed 40-thousand towards the project but again that was the original getting it out of the water and putting it back in cost. So we have got some partners in the Lorena, but again we're waiting on the final cost," said County Commissioner, Jim Porter.

The Muskingum County Commissioner's Office and the City of Zanesville have already put over 80-thousand dollars worth of repairs and expenses into the Lorena over the past five years. The Commissioner's say they're struggling with spending general fund dollars on the Lorena and as with any business, they have to weigh the cost versus the revenue.

"We realize it has a history in the city and the County as far as attracting people, and that's it's purpose, but again, is it worth what we're putting into it."

The Coast Guard will be back in Zanesville tomorrow to give more details on what repairs are needed for the Lorena.
