When catastrophic events happen, like the deadly bombing at the Boston marathon, it is normal to feel threatened- even at home.
Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz says through law enforcement training, you're taught to expect the unexpected, to be familiar with your surroundings, and to think suspicious of all activity,
"You just have to take the mentality, if you look at every aspect of it, of what could happen,” Lutz said. “What could somebody do here or what could they do there and you just try to picture those things. Use your experience from things, that you have observed, and found out that have happened in other places, and you try to carry those over to be as safe as possible. "
The Sheriff's Office is always planning and preparing to keep the residents of Muskingum County safe,
"The cooperation and the collaboration in this county is very important. And we have a very good group of people who come together and plan for different things that could happen. I want to pay tribute to those guys, I think that is one of the reason why we can say that we have a safe community is because of some of these efforts. "
Some of the ways deputies prepare are with local emergency planning meetings, disaster drills and having a terrorist liaison on staff.
