Stealing unused or expired prescription medications is one top ways drug abusers feed their habit.
This Saturday you will have a chance to properly dispose of old medication. It's a partnership between the Muskingum County Sheriff's Office, The Health Department, Genesis Health Care Systems, Muskingum Behavioral Health, Northside Pharmacy, and the Drug Enforcement Agency..
"North Side told us they would take liquids and they would dispose of them,” said Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz. “And of course Chad Williams, who is an auxiliary deputy for me, that works at Genesis Healthcare Systems, Genesis got on board and said they would dispose of the sharps of all the needles. So we are offering a service a little bit more than the DEA wanted to do and it really has been a big for our community."
There will be a drive-thru set up at the Zanesville Muskingum County Health Department from 10 am. to 2 pm.
"You hand the bag out the window, No questions asked, what is in there, and we take it over. Obviously what we do then is, we separate it, we drops the pills over in the DEA containers for them to pick up, the pill bottles go over into a recyclable bin to get recycled. "
This is a free program and is a safer option than simply throwing them away or down the drain. Only legal prescription drugs will be accepted.
