A local organization is improving children's literacy by providing a nationwide program to Muskingum County.
The Kiwanis Club is unveiling the Little Free Library program as thier President's Project for the month. The libraries are small boxes where books can be stored and picked up by anyone who wants to read them. The locations will be strategically placed.
" We are going to look for locations that maybe aren't close to the public libraries so that children that may not have the opportunities to go out to the library to get books can get them when they're shopping at the mall or other locations can get access to free books, " President Kevin Pinson said.
They will start off with four boxes and if it goes well the group may expand, Pinson believes the program will benefit the community.
" Absolutely I think reading is probably one of the most important things we can teach children. If we can get them to develop a love for books and they can have access to as many books as the want that is a plus for the community," Pinson said.
The project was a community effort. The boxes were old newspaper bins donated by The Times Recorder and the graphics on the boxes were done by Xpressive graphics here in town.
