A program in our area hopes to create self esteem and awareness in area girls.
The Sensitivity, Tolerance, Attitude, Responsibility, Self-Esteem Program or STARS is signing up current 6,7 and 8th grade girls for their summer program. Here they'll take part in 17 activities over the course of three day that teach them everything from eating healthy to self defense to how to interview for a job.
"I was a teacher for 30 years. I saw that there was a need for a lot of thing that aren't taught in school," said Organizer Cindy Brandi. "We try and make it as fun for girls as we can, teach them to set reasonable goals and that they are worth setting these goals to make the best of their potential."
Brandi also hopes the program will help the teens gain self esteem. Some of the sessions are hands on.
"They just finished nine months of classroom and so you don't want to be sitting around listening to a lot of conversation. We want them to be actively involved as much as possible," said Brandi.
The deadline to register is Monday May 13. The program will take place at Zane Grey Elementary June 5-7. The cost is $15. To register call (740) 849-0297 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
