Troopers from the Zanesville Post responded to the scene of an accident around 2:30 p.m. this afternoon when a Ford Explorer carrying two people was driving westbound on I-70 near mile post 166. The SUV rolled over multiple times and ejected the two people in the vehicle.
"The vehicle crossed the median and after it came across the median, it began overturning in the median into the eastbound lanes of traffic. No other vehicles were struck but the two occupants in this vehicle were both fatally injured," said Lt. Matt Boyd.
I-70 eastbound was shut down for several hours after the crash causing a huge backup of traffic. The Ohio Department of Transportation was on the scene assisting OSHP. Lt. Boyd says it's unclear what caused the accident.
Lt. Boyd explained, "Speed could have been a factor. We do have witness statements that said they veered into the median so it's not certain whether something happened to cause them to lose control or exactly what occurred."
The names of the victims are not being released at this time. Lt. Boyd says the victims are both from Pennsylvania. Highway Patrol is working to locate their addresses to notify their family.
