"You are late on your payments and law enforcement will get involved," is a familiar message scam artists have been using on victims in Muskingum County.
The Zanesville Police Department says that they have received notification that scammers are using their name to extort money from unsuspecting people. Police Chief, Eric Lambes says this isn't possible for the department because it's not in their jurisdiction.
"The police department does not get involved in any bill collecting or any kind of threats or calls of solicitation like that, " said Lambes.
Lambes says there are signs people can look for to avoid being ripped off.
" Usually in most scams they throw a sense of urgency out there, you have to do this right now or else. This is the only way you can avoid paying so much extra money or avoid getting a warrant, " said lambes.
Lambes says that the calls have been placed over the last couple of weeks. He says if people think they are being scammed call the police department immediately so that they can put a stop to the issue. As of now the department is not releasing names of the victims.
