If you are thinking about taking your boat out during the summer there are some basic precautions every boater should take before leaving the dock. Watercraft Officer Specialist, Mark Klies says that every person on a boat should have a regulation life jacket available that fits their size and weight.
"They should always have life jackets with them and of course wearing them is always a good thing. The majority of you accidents would've most likely be prevented if people were wearing their life jackets at the time," said Klies.
Along with having the proper equipment people should keep suncreen, water and other neccesities on the boat in case of emergency. Boaters of a certain age also need proper certification to operate a watercraft.
" Anybody born on or after January 1st of 1982 is required to have a boating education certificate to operate a powerboat 10 horse and up," said Klies.
He also urges people to stay sober while operating a boat in order to keep a clean record and not receive an OUI. If you want more information about the rules and regulations on the water you can visit the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Website under their Watercraft Division .
