Church members are cleaning up a soggy mess today after a roof collapsed at their church in downtown Zanesville.
The Grace United Methodist Church's custodian discovered the hole early Friday morning. Dan Arter, a trustee for the church, says they think water from this weeks rain built up on the roof and became so heavy, it collapsed.
Arter says they estimate at least 2,200 gallons of water came through the building, destroying pews, doors, carpet and tile all the way to the basement. He says mass will be canceled this week, but they will have mass at the Zanesville-Muskingum County Welcome Center this Sunday at 10:15 a.m. Arter says it's unclear on how much the repairs will be.
