18-month-old Callista Lynch was born with spina bifida, a common birth defect that affects the spine and eventually causes other complications. The Lynch family will travel to Columbus early Wednesday morning for Callista's eighth surgery.

"No one here will treat her because they don't have the skills, the equipment," said Kim Lynch, Callista's mother. "So everytime she needs something, we're driving to Columbus. And if they don't have it in Columbus, then we'll drive to Cincinnati or Akron. It's definitely been rough for us."

Callista will eventually need a walker and a wheelchair along with continuous physical and occupational therapy, so the family is having a fundraiser to help with those costs and to prepare for future surgeries and needs.

"We right now have over 50 silent auction and chinese auction items. We got the chicken donated to us so we're well ahead at that point. We'll also have hot dogs and sloppy joes and dessert, 50/50, lots of fun things to do."

The fundraiser is July 28 from 11-2 p.m. at Prophets Park in Zanesville. The Lynch family also plans on donating a portion of the proceeds to the Central Ohio Spina Bifida Association and to an organization that makes care packages for children with neurological issues staying in hospitals.
