Robbery in Athens

The Athens County Sheriff's Office searches for a suspect in a Wednesday night robbery.

Sheriff Patrick Kelly said the robber was believed to be in the Foodland Grocery Store on the Plains around closing time on July 16 and told employees he lost his cell phone. He returned on the July 17 around 10 p.m. and asked employees if he could look in the back of the store for his phone.

The store closed at 10 p.m. The man returned to the front of the store, pulled a handgun and told the three employees to get on the floor. The gunman had the employees take the money out of the safe. He had zip ties on his belt and secured the employees together and place them in a room off the deli.

The gunman left in a four door light vehicle possible a Sonata or like model vehicle. He was wearing a gray pullover long sleeve with red ball cap.
