Alpaca Industry In The U.S.

Tuesday's speaker at the Noon Rotary Club of Zanesville discussed the need for an alpaca industry and how it would drive back business to the United States.

"Our alpaca farm is a breeding farm," said Jaime Morgan, Marketing Director of The Alpacas of Spring Acres. "Currently in the United States, there's probably a little over 300,000 alpacas and we need a million to create an industry here in the United States."

You can make everything from sweaters, scarves, blankets and even children's toys with alpaca fleece. Alpaca fiber is actually warmer and lighter than wool. Morgan says the price is comparable to angora.

"We would love for people to get involved in alpacas," said Morgan. "We think it would be a great industry in the United States. And their fibers have allergenic so I think it would be great."

The Alpacas of Spring Acres also give free tours by appointment. If you're interested in learning more, you can contact them at 740-796-2195
