In some parts of the state pet owners and their four legged family members are falling victim to crime.
Authorities in Clark and Delaware counties both say they've had people take pets found wandering on the street sold on Craigslist. It's a term referred to by some as pet flipping.
To protect your pets from falling victim there are some steps you can take. The Animal Shelter Society's Executive Director said your best protection is having your pet micro chipped.
"That's your best thing to do because if your dog is ever found or scanned at a vet's office or a clinic some place it's going to come back to the owner's name," said Animal Shelter Executive Director Jody Murray.
Murray also said it's important to have an update dog license and name and address on the collar so your pet can be returned if found wandering. It's also a good idea to keep an eye on your animal when they're outside.
"Pets are a little like your children," explained Murray. "You want to provide them with good supervision, either have a physical boundary or a invisible fencing. Ultimately good supervision is going to be the best thing."
The Animal Shelter does micro chip pets as well as your local veterinarians.
