According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, summertime and summer holiday's are the peak season for accidents, speeding and drunk driving. This Labor Day weekend, drivers will see an increased presence of troopers.
"We try to have at least 80% of our people out over the holiday weekends in the summer time," said Sgt. Chuck Merryman. "Such as Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day weekend. We also have overtime that we post for our troopers to even increase our presence more so on the highway."
Sgt. Merryman says with an increase of holiday traffic, more crashes are likely to occur.
"If you're gonna be out and you do plan on having a drink or two, it's a good idea of course, to have a designated driver. I mean you can't go wrong with that. Drive defensively; there's gonna be a lot more cars on the roadway and I would say plan ahead. Maybe give yourself a little more time."
Sgt. Merryman says troopers will have a no tolerance policy for excessive speed, driving drunk and any other violations that might cause an accident.
