September is national preparedness month and the Red Cross wants local families to know how to stay safe.

Executive Director of the Muskingum Valley Red Cross says that families should make a kit, make a plan, and be informed.

"The first thing you should always know is what kind of disasters can happen in your community, but also be very aware that the home fire is always the one you want to protect yourself from," said Marlene Henderson.

Along with home fires, power outages, tornados and flooding are all common disasters for this area. Henderson says that each family member should have a bag individualized to their needs, but there are a few basic items that everyone should have.

"Put things in there like flash lights, batteries, toilet paper, and cash because sometimes if there is a power outage a store might be open with a generator, but the registers you can't use that, " said Henderson.

For more information about preparedness you can visit the Red Cross in person, online at or at the Muskingum County Fairgrounds this Saturday at Farm City Day. At the event  they will be passing out candy, valuable pamphlets, and free dvds.
