There is a new and dangerous craze among young adults and teens, instead of drinking alcohol, they are smoking it.
The practice of inhaling alcohol has become popular through two main motivations: a diet option, because you are not ingesting the calories of alcohol and to experience a faster and stronger high.
"Bottom line is, you're ingesting alcohol at a very fast rate and in a manner that it doesn't start to metabolize,” said CEO of Muskingum Behavioral Health, Steve Carrel. “It hits the lungs, hits the blood, goes straight to the brain and starts working on the brain fairly quickly, and if enough gets there, it will shut the brain down, and that's death,"
There is also a common misconception that, if you smoke alcohol, rather than drink it, you will pass a breathalyzer test, which is false.
"On a breathalyzer, it is the alcohol metabolite that is expelled in the air, so you are still consuming alcohol and it's still being processed. It's still going to come out of your lungs so they can still test you accurately for your BAC."
Carrel advises to never attempt to smoke alcohol because no one knows what a fatal dose will be.
