The first 15 seconds you spend with someone can affect how the rest of the conversation or interaction goes.
That was the topic of discussion at Tuesday's Noon Rotary Club of Zanesville by fellow Rotarian Michael Angelo Caruso. Caruso is a communication consultant and an expert in "tricking" people into being more successful. On Tuesday, he offered up his expertise to local professionals and Rotarians.
"For example, you want to be the first person to hold out your hand and initiate the handshake because that means you'll have more influence in the interaction," said Caruso. "Second thing that we know is that by smiling in the first 15 seconds you can disarm almost anybody. We don't smile nearly enough in this world and the first 15 seconds is a good time to show that expression."
Caruso also talked about the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication. He said improving those signals will help you give a sharper presentation.
"I teach professionals how to be better speakers so one of the things I tell them is that the eyebrows are key to opening up your expression. Just by raising your eyebrows what happens is your brighten your entire face and I don't know a person yet that I've been teaching in the speaking business who focuses on their eyebrows. It's a nice little trick."
Caruso has already been asked to come back to Zanesville. You can go online to www.MichaelAngeloCaruso.com
