You might think of surveys as a hassle, but it turns out they can be very useful when brining new businesses to the area.
The Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce is kicking off it's annual wage and benefits survey in less than a week. The "quick and easy" online survey is filled out by Muskingum County business employers and employees and it's used to collect valuable information for prospective and local businesses.
"This is really valuable information for us to have, it gives us an economic development tool because this is commonly requested information from companies that are looking at locating here and it's also really helpful information for employers that are already here," said ZMCCC President Tom Poorman. "It helps them prepare their budgets, it helps them make sure that their wages and benefits are in line with the marketplace."
Poorman said the survey is also an important tool that's used to bring new companies to expand here in Ohio. Companies like Avon, Halliburton, Dollar General and Fanatics have all requested information found in the survey.
"They need to know what's the cost of doing business in this community before they make a decision if they want to come there. They want to know typically what are the pay rates, what are the benefit levels. They want to know the cost of electricity, the cost of land, the cost of building. They want to know all those sorts of issues so that they can do the arithmetic and find out, 'how does this community compare to another one?'"
The number of employees and employers who participate varies. The survey is conducted in partnership with the Port Authority, the local Human Resource Management Association and JK Evans and Associates.
