Deer Meat Feeding the Hungry

Every deer harvested during hunting season can provide about 30 to 40 pounds of meat, which in turn can feed up to 200 hungry mouths.

This is according to Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry Program and Tuesday morning the Muskingum and Morgan County Chapter Coordinator of FHFH, Robert Daniels spoke with local food banks regarding the program.

"Keely Warden at Christ's table is my go to person,” Daniels said. “She is the one who makes sure the different churches get the meat and she has somebody go and pick it up and takes it to those different food banks. I have four processors in Muskingum county. Olde Village meats, Phillips Meats, Carl Meats, and Red Burger Meats."

The processors have been certified by the state and anyone wishing to donate their harvested deer can take it to any one of the four processors.

“However, there is a cost,” Daniels added. “I just upped the ante to 60 dollars a deer, to have it processed, because they weren't making any money and they still are not, but hopefully they are not loosing any and I have to collect donations from different groups or organizations to do that."
