A stranger danger Halloween safety outing took place at Ohio University Zanesville Thursday evening.
Hundreds of parents and children packed the OUZ Campus Center to hear OUZ Public Safety Director, Bethany Hayes go over safety precautions while out trick or treating. Hayes discussed basic tips, like only going out with parents or trustworthy friends and family members. She also reminded children to not take candy from those you don't know and only trick or treat in areas that you are familiar with. Parents who attended the first ever event were pleased with the turnout and discussion topics.
" I'm really impressed," said Jennifer Hopkins. My husband is the director at the library for OUZ, so of course I came because of that, but I'm impressed there's this many people out on a Thursday night. "
One child says after listening to the presentation, he knows exactly what to do in case of an emergency.
"I would do what the instructor said and I would scream and say you're not my mommy, you're not my daddy, you're a stranger and leave me alone," said Attendee, Gennaro Sevaro.
In addition to learning opportunities, children came in costume, played games and received treats for attending. Organizers plan to have this event annually.
