Pre-school students through the Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center get a lesson in the importance of reading.
November is National Literacy month and to celebrate guest readers have come to the pre-school classrooms. Thursday, WHIZ's Brian Wagner and his wife Christine spent time reading to special education students at the MVESC's preschool classes at Starlight.
"It just helps to add that level of importance," said Early Childhood Director at MVESC Krystal McFarland. "How important literacy is, how important reading is and just helps encourage families and parents to read and helps the children to see that we value reading, value literacy in the classroom."
McFarland said they encourage parents to read to their children twenty minutes each day.
"It helps develop their language skills, it helps them to learn colors, letters and shapes and there is just a litany of things that it can help with their development," said McFarland.
McFarland said if children don't learn to read it can affect them clear to adulthood.
