On Friday, volunteers from the Muskingum Valley Garden Society started planting dozens of different kinds of plants in front of the Welcome Center. Darlene Turner, a MVGS volunteer, says this is just one step to help beautify downtown Zanesville.
"We've been involved with the planting downtown with the downtown containers and the Y-Bridge for the last four or five years and this is another project that we'd like to take on to help," said Turner.
Turner says she and the other volunteers will be planting low-maintenance plants that won't be over bearing. With the new 5th Street renovation, the gardeners will also be adding more potted plants throughout downtown Zanesville.
"We'll have 35 new containers on 5th Street from here down to the river and we will also replant the plants on main street. We have surprises here for the downtown community for next summer , our plants that we have chosen for the downtown containers will be a little bit different than we had in the past. A little bit of variety and hopefully a lot of color."
Planting is expected to be completed by Saturday.
