Zanesville City Council passed a traffic order that prohibits southbound traffic on Maple Avenue to turn left onto Bell Street. So if you're driving southbound on Maple and need to turn into Walmart or the Genesis Health Plex, you now have to turn left at Balls Lane.
"With the new safety study, ODOT enlarged the intersection with Balls Lane, moved it further up by Bethesda Hospital," explained City of Zanesville Safety Director, Fred Buck. "That new road there is a lot cleaner, wider and open with more timing and is less congested. It should be a lot easier of an entrance. It's just people have always used the Bell Street entrance. So it's by habit now they're going there."
It's been about 10 days since the traffic change and Buck says his office has noticed the busy intersection is not nearly as congested.
"We also instituted dual left turns coming out of Bell, we striped the street last week. It's gonna take a little time to get used to it, we don't have a lot of dual left turns. So we actually tried it a few years ago when we had construction at Maple and Adair and it worked quite well, but it just takes time for people to realize what they have there."
Buck says the orange barrels near the intersection will be taken down either Tuesday or Wednesday.
