A local company surprises the staff at Zane Grey Elementary with a large donation to use to promote literacy.
Employees from Dollar General visited the school on Thursday to give away a $40,000 dollar check. The money will be used towards providing more books and additions to the school's library. Distribution Director for Dollar General, Ron Dennis says that giving back to the community is a part of the company's tradition.
It's the heart and soul of our charitable work. It started with the founder of our company and the CEO today, we have done tons of work throughout Ohio and Zanesville specifically with literacy, " said Dennis
Coincidentally teachers say that the school was already in the midst of hosting a Polar Express Family Literacy day for students and their parents on Thursday, which Dennis says lets him know they made the right decision. The faculty says that they will discuss how to use all of the money in more detail but for now they are just extremely grateful.
"Well for one of the first times in my life I was actually speechless," said Zane Grey Principal, Tony Sines. It's a great opportunity for us to build another community partner and again promote family literacy in this school."
The Dollar General says that they are happy to help promote education in the area for more than 25 years and hope to continue in the future.
