Filing's under way for this year's tax season.
An Internal Revenue Service spokesperson said that filing for tax season began January 31 and will end on April 15. Those making above $10,000 must file a return.
When filing the IRS said it's helpful to keep documents such as receipts for income, expenses and child care organized. Using tax prep software can also take some of the headaches away.
"A lot of people have found that using tax software can really help them because a lot of errors are simple human errors, math miscalculations, forgetting to transfer a certain number from one block to another on the form and the software will do that for you,".said IRS spokesperson Jennifer Jenkins.
If you choose to have someone prepare your taxes you are ultimately responsible for what is placed on the forms. Jenkins said the way to protect yourself is to be informed.
"Tax return preparers are great," said Jenkins. "There are some bad apples out there. However, you want to make sure that you are getting a copy of the finished return for your own files, you're asking questions if you have any concerns about the information that is on there. Never sign a blank return."
