Since 2006, the United Way of Muskingum, Perry and Morgan Counties has been providing free tax preparation services for residents. Executive director Meg Deedrick, said the free service was started to increase income for families and households in the three county region the United Way serves.
"For many people that tax return is going to be the largest lump sum that they're gonna receive all year long, that's not already budgeted for something," said Deedrick. "And so we found that if we could help them access all of that money, or as much of that money as possible through these free tax preparation workshops, then they'd have even more to work with."
United Way volunteers help residents complete only simple returns. And so far this year, Deedrick said they have already served 386 clients.
"We are at 69% goal of the number of people we want to serve. We want to serve over 560 clients and that's well over 1,000 tax returns when you count both federal and state and as i said, we're at nearly 70% of that goal.
There are still plenty of appointments available throughout the month of March. For more information you can call 2-1-1. Since 2006 the United Way of MPM has completed over 4,000 returns resulting in $2.9 million in tax returns.
