The 8th annual Gary Finnicum Memorial Wheelin' Sportsmen Handicap Hunt was held on Saturday at Blue Rock State Park.
More than 20 handicapped hunters assisted by their volunteer guides went into the forest in search of wild turkeys. Some went home empty handed, while others scored big.
"About 20 minutes until 8 a.m., three birds come in two hens and a gobbler and I was fortunate enough to make a good shot on a gobbler and make good on the shot," said Hunter, Carl Slagle.
Slagle's bird weighed more than twenty pounds, it had a ten inch beard and 7/8 of an inch spurs. He says because of his disability this hunting experience wouldn't be possible without assistance from others.
" My guides took care of me when. We left this morning, they loaded all of the stuff, all of the equipment in the truck, we went to the site, they helped me out to the site. They helped me through the woods, and through the trails, through the mud and carried everything for me, " said Slagle.
The Y-Bridge Sportsmen would like to thank the Ohio Department of Natural Resources divisions of Wildlife and Forestry for issuing permits, the volunteers and the locals who provided all the food and drinks for the event. They hope to see even more out next year.
