Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in the United States.

Every 40 seconds someone new suffers a stroke. Symptoms sometimes include tingling on one side of the body, sudden weakness or slurred speech. But, sometimes the signs aren't as noticeable.

"It might just be dizziness or some other vague symptom that might be hard to attribute to stroke," said Genesis Healthcare Neurologist Dr. Bryan Bjornstad.

Dr. Bjornstad said if any of these symptoms occur it's important to call 911 and get help immediately. There is only a three to four and a half hour window where certain treatments are possible.

"Once they get into the hospital then we have a series of testing that we have to do to make sure they haven't had any bleeding inside the brain or any other risk factors," explained Dr. Bjornstad.

Genesis recently received the "Get with the Guidelines Stroke Silver-Plus Quality Achievement Award."  The award signifies that the Genesis team has maintained an 85 percent achievement in seeing suspected stroke patients within ten minutes of arrival and reading labs within forty-five minutes, among other criteria.
